Jan29

We would like to announce the availability of a new server, Dallas.TX.US.Xtris.net, located in Dallas, Texas, United States.

We have also had some slight changes with our Chicago, Illinois operations. The server Arlington.IL.US.Xtris.net has been removed, and the Chicago.IL.US.Xtris.net has changed IP. This means we are now hosted in multiple data centers, giving some extra redundancy.

The Server Listings have been updated and DNS entries have been modified to reflect these changes, however, should you see any timeout issues simply connect using the irc.xtris.net round robin, or directly to the new server, Dallas.TX.US.Xtris.net.

Thank you in advance for your patience in this matter and for your continued patronage.

Upgrades, upgrades, upgrades!

Jan4

For the attention of all users,

On the afternoon of Sun 4th January, 2009, all Xtris IRC servers had a major overhaul. This upgrade has introduced a set of new features and tools that affect both staff and users alike.

I'd like to take the time to introduce the user changes you will see:

Probably the most noticeable change is that if you use a registered nickname, and do not authenticate to it within 2 minutes, NickServ will automatically change your nick to a random Guest****. A warning is sent when you are using a registered nick and are not authenticated to the account that owns it
Upgrades to our title system, allowing you to customise the .user part of your +x host. You may choose one by joining #support
Users are set +iw when they connect to the network for their security; if you don't want to be "invisible", you can set -i after
No single-letter nicks may be used; this helps prevent service impersonations
Topic Burst; negotiations during net splits should keep the network tidy and should retain your topics
The channel mode +D (delayed join) has made its return; this is particularly useful during floods. If you're unsure of this mode, please see the Channel & User Modes page for an explanation
Account Only; users may set the usermode +R so that only authenticated users may /MSG, /NOTICE, /CTCP or /DCC them. This appends a new line to /WHOIS data, which reads: nick only accepts messages from authed users
AutoChanModes; newly created channels will be set +ntC automatically by the server
Channel modes +C and +c remain; no CTCP and no colour respectively
You may now use the "!" commands in all channels, regardless of whether ChanServ is present or not
You will now see a notification when an INVITE is issued in a channel (assuming you are opped). It appears as: * Target has been invited by Inviter
All registered channels now have a new default mode, +z. This mode keeps all channel data and modes even when no one is in the channel (including when Services are split from the network)

The Network Management would like to thank our SV ('Server Operations') Group for their hard work.

We hope you enjoy the new features.

Network Status Utility Relaunched!

Nov19

By Dan on Nov 19, 2008 10:57 PM
(1 year, 9 months, 2 weeks, 6 days, 9 hours, 13 minutes ago)

We are pleased to announce that the Network Status utility has been updated to include a "live" server check on all publicly accessible servers.

The check is performed every 30 minutes, and reports whether the server is currently Up or Down, and the elapsed time since the last check.

This should allow for accurate information on our Server listings and allow you to troubleshoot whether a connectivity problem is on your end, or on ours.

However, it should be noted that if the "Up" status returns that the server is down, please verify it. It may be caused by the webserver having difficulties; it should not be conclusively trusted.

As always, the Network Status page also allows you to see any (un)planned outages affecting our network operation.

If you experience any anomalies with this new system, please contact us!

Important Operational Change

Aug19

By Dan on Aug 19, 2008 12:49 PM
(2 years, 2 weeks, 6 days, 19 hours, 21 minutes ago)

To all users

There have been some exciting changes to the network operation, meaning some substantial operational announcements that we need to make.

As of 19th August, 2008, our network operation has moved from being hosted in London, United Kingdom to new data centers in Chicago, Illinois, United States.

These changes will allow us to move our operation to the next phase, building our network stronger and more robust than ever before!

With immediate effect, server names and IP addresses have been changed; our DNS records have been updated to reflect this.

We are still running the UK-based network to allow for a transition period; however, bear in mind that Services will be unavailable on the old operation.

You can view our Servers page to see the new servers, or of course, continue to use the random DNS entries:

irc.xtris.net
irc.eu.xtris.net
irc.us.xtris.net

... or the specific hostnames listed on the Servers page.

If you experience any problems, we will be pleased to assist you in #support or of course through our Support Form.

We hope you are excited about these changes as us, and that they enhance your user experience.

The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls. -- Elizabeth Cady Stanton
